So tonight, I went to the Imogen Heap concert at The Ryman. It blew my mind. I have always been a fan of hers- always loved her music, but what unfolded tonight was something beyond my imagination. Hands down, the best concert or event I have ever been to (and I have been to some amazing ones). I dont mean to gush, but there is no way around it. She is brilliant.
Imogen was suprisingly very down to earth; she was humble, genuine and incredibly witty. She was present throughout the entire night, which i loved- as she individually introduced and spoke of the three bands that opened for her (who also joined her when it was her turn to take the stage). She tailors her concerts to the city she is playing in. For instance, for each city she goes to, she finds a choir from that city to sing with her during a couple songs- for Nashville, it was a group called "We Are Nashville." She also takes poles from each city before she goes there to find out the top 12 songs they would like to hear, and then plans her playlist accordingly. She said the reasoning behind this was that when memebers of the audience would yell out requests at her shows she was never quite prepared for them and sometimes did not even remember that she wrote the song in the first place!
Each show she does, she creates a song for the audience right in front of them- the audience picks the notes, tempo, and something else (that I cant remember). The song she made in front of us was beautiful. She then downloads the song onto her site, which can be bought for a dollar, and all the money goes to a charity that is run by the city she created it in! The money that comes from the song tonight will go directly to the Nashville flood relief.
It seemed that every few minutes, I was suprised by something she did in her show. She gracefully fluttered around the stage, sang, and played every instrument you could think of (and a few ones i had never seen before). Her voice is so pure. Every note is laid out so effortlessly, and the high notes; well it is shocking that a human is capable of reaching them so beautifuly and seamlessly.
Her show must be experienced in person- my words dont do it justice. She is a true artist, unlike anyone I have ever seen. She is my girl-crush.
